A combination of (a) my hastily written opinions/reviews about my latest pop culture excursions; (b) inner musings that may come of those excursions and/or unrelated phenomena; (c) good practice toward, and a low-budget prototype for, an eventual webzine; and (d) whatever seems to work well that day.

MartaCycle tagged me with the following music-related quiz:

1.Total amount of music files on your computer? I currently have 1,968 songs equaling 5.7 days or 7.6 GB on iTunes.

2. The CD you last bought is? That would be a tie between Luna's "Rendezvous" and PJ Harvey's "Uh Huh Her."

3. What is the song you last listened to before reading this message? Iron Maiden's "Drifter" from their second album, "Killers." And it is rawking me mightily.

4. Write down 5 songs you often listen to or that mean a lot to you. 1. "Bird on a Wire" by Leonard Cohen 2. "Contemplation" by Bill Nelson 3. "Deuce" by Kiss 4. "Chinatown" by Luna 5. "Divorce Song" by Liz Phair.

5. Who are you going to pass this stick to? (3 persons) and why? I'll try LostActor because it is always interesting to learn more about his musical tastes, _Little_Fifteen 'cuz it is her birthday week and she seems to like this quizzy sort of thing (and I know she loves music), and a third party to be named later.

Thanks, MartaCycle!

Happy birthday, Comfy Pain! I am hoping to play in your birthday show tomorrow and, as a present and tribute, show you how much I have learned from you since joining ComedySportz two years ago.

And as yet another nod to you, I borrowed this topic from your Live Journal:

Ten Things I've Done That You Haven't... Probably...

1. Met Leonard Cohen in San Francisco.
2. Watched my son hit a grand slam in Kidsports softball.
3. Saw Kiss in concert at the Cow Palace the night that Elvis Presley died.
4. Simultaneously published a professional wrestling newsletter and poetry magazine.
5. Taken classes from, and had as a graduate advisor at San Francisco State University, a professor who would go on to write at least three New York Times bestsellers after I graduated (Frances Mayes).
6. Visited London while the United Kingdom had its worst winter in 38 years.
7. Saw a UFO.
8. Saw six movies at the theater in one day --- at least three times.
9. Talked to Ric Flair, Paul Heyman, Missy Hyatt, Beautiful Bobby Eaton, The Great Muta, Roddy Piper, and other wrestlers in one fun-tastic weekend.
10. Saw The Clash on their "London Calling" tour.

Three-fourths of the amazing Luna Posted by Hello

Luna's Britta and Dean Posted by Hello

I want to post here how wonderfully amazing it was to see both of Luna's farewell shows in Oregon this week, really I do. But it is 2:00 a.m. on Friday-into-Saturday and I need eight hours sleep bigtime! I have Portland Wrestling with Martacycle and her sons tomorrow, and then a Sunday double-entertainment-header of Martacycle and some of her fellow Portland ComedySportz Farm Team players in their annual Battle of the Sexes, and the sure-to-be-fabulous Interpol and Blonde Redhead show at The Roseland.

I went to the Eugene Luna show at the WOW Hall with Durden Kent, and many thanks to you, sir, for giving me that little extra bit of oomph needed to actually go to that concert when I had the gift ticket to the Portland show in hand already (thanks again, C-Note!). Luna always amazes, and this performance was no exception. They played three of my top four favorite Luna songs and the rest of the set was quite nice, too, leaning heavily on their wonderful new CD, "Rendezvous."

I expected a different song or two the next night in Portland, but was flabbergasted when the set list had 12 different songs than they played in Eugene! They opened with "Chinatown," the fourth of the top four that they didn't play in Eugene. (Sorry you were too sick to make it, MC, but you were there in spirit.) So over the course of both nights, I got to hear 20-something to 30-something different Luna songs performed live in front of me for the last time ever.

And yes, I was emotional, especially on Wendesday. Luna has meant a lot to me over the past 13 years. Their music got me through several tough spots in my life. They have a style all their own. I will greatly miss having the prospect of seeing them live again, but these performances were a fantastic way to remember them. The shows left me feeling happy that I had the opportunity to have followed them since their first album, and had the chance to see them in concert at least six times over the years. Thanks, Luna.

"Chinatown"

in the tiny tiny hours
(be) tween the evening and the day
we have placed our final bets
we have come out to play

fancy drinks and lucky toasts
i like this time the most
you're out all night chasin' girlies
you're late to work and you go home earlies

lookin' lost in chinatown
why are we hidin' from our friends
rushing 'round in taxi cabs
is it time to make amends
you'll get yours and i'll get mine
you can't be lucky all the time

you're out all night chasin' girlies
you're late to work and you go home earlies

It's a great day for rawk!

Not only did Martacycle secure our tickets this morning for Elvis Costello next month (thanks, you), and not only is Luna next week, but Motorhead was announced for April 9 at the Roseland --- the night after Elvis the C. plays there! Holy smokes, it's like the late seventies/early eighties all over again musically --- no complaints here!

Here are the lyrics to the Motorhead song I am cranking as I type this:

Deaf Forever

Stoneface dog, swirling fog, gates open on the dark dark night
Standing stone, skull and bone, dead witness to an unseen fight
Beat the drum, beat the drum, beat forever on the endless march
Stricken dumb, cut and run, someone is screaming and the sky is dark

[Chorus]
Sword and shield, bone and steel, rictus grin
Deaf forever to the battles din

March or croak, flame and smoke, burn forever in eternal pain
Charge and fall, bugle call, bone splinter in the driving rain
Horses scream, Viking dream, drowned heroes in a lake of blood
Armoured fist, severed wrist, broken spears in a sea of mud

[Repeat chorus]

Mother earth, mother earth enfold you in her cold embrace
Sinking down, killing ground, worm crawling on your cold white face
Win or lose, nought to choose, all men are equal when their memory fades
No one knows, friends or foes, if Valhalla lies beyond the grave
